Operating principles

I

Impact

Our priority is that our work unlocks more harmonious ways of operating as a society. We partner with and without profit motives, but always with the question of whether what we do genuinely contributes to collective wellbeing.

II

Life first

Nature is not a resource to be managed but an intelligence that precedes us. We offer our time, knowledge and innovation to its flourishing. When there is doubt about a decision, life has the final word.

III

Devotion

Every project, client or partner is sacred. We treat each relationship with the utmost responsibility and honor the trust placed in our work.

IV

Co-creation

The best analyses are not built from a desk. We seek alliance with diverse knowledge and perspectives — scientific, community, institutional — because the complexity of each endeavor demands multiple ways of knowing.

V

Systems thinking

The environmental challenge does not exist in isolation: it is interlocked with economics, politics, culture and history. We refuse to simplify what is complex. We contemplate, discuss and challenge our work with the most holistic perspective possible.

VI

Plurality of voices and worldviews

There is no single way to understand territory, nor a single vision of the future that counts. We seek articulation with different priorities, opinions and worldviews. Dissent also matters, as long as there is respect.

VII

Welcoming uncertainty

Living systems are inherently unpredictable. We do not pretend to certainties that do not exist. We recognize the unforeseen as a constitutive part of any real process and build methodologies that are robust in the face of complexity, not ones that evade it.

VIII

Quality over quantity

We study each project meticulously and care for our team's quality of life. We prefer to do fewer things with more depth than to grow without criterion.

IX

Independence

TierraLabs' agenda is not dictated by any public or private actor. Our analyses respond to evidence, not to the interests of those who hire us.

X

Transparency

We are open about our funding, governance and methodology in each case where that information is relevant. Transparency is not a policy: it is a way of building lasting relationships of trust.
